Announcing: Trestle Churn!

Say hello to my newest quilt pattern: Trestle Churn! Trestle Churn is inspired by the trestles on railroad bridges and the traditional Churn Dash block. It is a modern, beginner-friendly quilt that is a great skill-builder and opportunity to fine-tune your scant ¼” seams.

Trestle Churn uses strip piecing and comes together very quickly! The sashing between blocks means fewer points to match (if that’s your thing) and the center squares in each block measure 4.5” finished, making them a great way to feature some fussy cut prints or a charm pack.

About the cover girl…

I had pulled these lovely greens from my stash to make a medium-size sample, and that task moved right up the priority list when I realized how perfect it would be to take with us to Ireland for some #QuiltsInTheWild photos! Obviously, it went in the carry-on suitcase on the way over, but I’ll admit it did come in handy to pad some bottles of Irish whiskey on the return trip 🥃

The photos above were taken at Sligo Abbey in Sligo, Ireland, and at Black Knowe glamping in Northern Ireland. True story: I forgot to get more photos once we returned home (life has been LIFE-ing) and now it’s at the NC State Fair, so Ireland pics are what you get! 🤣

For the quilting, I used an echoed variation of the “starcrossed” motif from Jacquie Gering’s Walk in variegated green Aurifil 50wt thread. I’m tickled at how it took on a very Celtic knot kind of look with the extra lines!

The strip piecing techniques used for all the block components in Trestle Churn make cutting an absolute breeze and the fabric requirements quite economical.

Trestle Churn is available to color digitally on QuiltInk - here are some other mockup ideas I’ve been playing with…

My tester Mandy (@burbankquilts) got creative and used FQs in bold, juicy prints - and she really made those center squares shine with strategic Tula Pink cuts!

I can always count on tester Melissa (@meliwoodcrafts) to bring the Ruby Star Society magic - I love the way she’s using the berry prints!
